Once you’ve identified suspicious activity, it’s time to act. Time to be that someone else others are counting on. Time to say something. Here’s how.

What to Say

To report suspicious activity, contact an authority or call 1-866-HLS-TIPS. In an emergency, dial 911. Describe specifically what you observed, including:

Who or what you saw
When you saw it
Where it occurred
Why it’s suspicious

Tell an Authority

Say something to an authority if there is one nearby.

Tell a police officer
On a bus, tell the driver
In a train or at a train station, tell a conductor or a transit worker
At an airport, mall, or other public area, tell security personnel
In a store or restaurant, tell the owner or manager
In the workplace, tell your boss or direct supervisor

Examples of what to say

I’m at the New Haven Union Station train station and there is a man here taking pictures. I saw him take pictures of the inside of the front doors, and I’m pretty sure he was taking pictures of the security cameras too. Although I might be wrong about that. He’s not very tall, under six feet. He’s dressed in jeans and a green striped sweater and has a decent looking camera.

I wanted to report a suspicious vehicle. For the last three days a white van has been parked at the Elmwood Fastrak stop. The license plate is 123-ABC. I haven’t seen anyone in it during the past three days, or even interact with it. It may be nothing, but it kind of creeps me out and I felt I should say something just in case.

Examples of what to say

I’m at the Metro-North station in Fairfield and there’s a weird smell. I don’t really know how to describe it. It’s kind of chemically smelling, but not like cleaning products or something. It’s pretty faint too. I don’t know if it’s something to be concerned about, but I wanted to say something just in case. It’s just an odd smell and I’m worried it might be something dangerous.
